Blue Creek Ohio

I just took a trip to Bluecreek, Ohio this week. I lived there when I was 13 and 14 years old. Actually, from the second half of 8th grade to the second half of 10th grade. Recently I took a tour of Adams county and visited the place where Cowboy Copas was born near the Bluecreek area.

For those who don't know, Bluecreek lies at a crossroads of 125 and( I think) 781 in Adams county. The school I went to is still there but it's boarded up and encircled with a fence. The Adams county homeless shelter is beside it now.

As I drove toward the community of Bluecreek (too small to be a village or town) I looked again at the rough land and the lush vegetation. Its as if nature has claimed that area for it's own. I was reminded how when it started to rain the school buses would line up to take us home. Otherwise the creek would rise and no one could get through until it went down.

I thought of how the town must have been when Cowboy Copas sang in bars around there. I believe that Adams county is still dry as it was in my youth but I don't think it was in his time. If it was he probably sang in bars across the county line. When I was a child if a person wanted to buy alcohol he had to go to Manchester for it. Manchester was in the edge of Adams county but they must have voted themselves wet.

Anyway, I've been thinking of setting a book in Bluecreek. Does anyone know why it's called Bluecreek. Is the creek blue?
